It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see

  5. It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see

People often tell me that they love my positivity and my upbeat outlook on life. It makes me smile of course, but I want you to know that I crafted, practiced and have chosen this attitude over many years. I have practiced many times over, changing my perspective. I am a firm believer in changing your perspective on the crappy things that happen in life.

“Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth.” – Marcus Aurelius

In my opinion perspective is a point of view. Perspective is defined as an attitude towards something, or a way of regarding something. You can’t change the things that happen to you, but you can change how you look at things and how you react to things.

You can focus on what isn’t working, or you can focus on what is working. You can look at people and see what they’re not good at, or you can recognise what they are good at, and then you can bring that out of them and make them shine.

We have all heard the popular sayings on perspective: “the glass is half empty, the glass is half full” or  “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” etc. But what I know and have experienced is that my perspective affects everything that happens to me. For example… A hot and humid day could be moaned about by some because they feel uncomfortable and are sweating OR it could be seen as a stunning day to relax at the beach and have a picnic.

The same activity, the same situation, but two different perspectives – one negative one positive.

We know that the roller coaster of life will bring good things and bad things. You can’t change them, but how you react to them and view them is up to you.

Whenever negative things happen in your life it’s important to acknowledge and feel what is happening but then at some point it is important to ask yourself, what is the positive in this? Is it an opportunity for you to grow? What can I learn from this WITHOUT becoming the victim or playing the poor me?

By putting a positive spin on the outcome has you in control and more powerful over the situation rather than powerless.  Hence why it is so important to get yourself into the habit of framing events positively versus negatively.  It allows you to be in the drivers seat of your life.

If you don’t like something change it, if you can’t change it then change the way you think about it.  When you change your perspective, you often change your feelings and reactions.  The situation itself naturally changes too most of the time for the better.

So I challenge you to pay attention to your perspective, in yourself, your relationships, your personal activities and in business. You have the ability, the power to alter your way of life by altering your perspective. All it might take is viewing the situation from different angles or as I say to many people – change the colour of the glasses you are wearing and see what other viewpoints you can come up with.

It’s critically important, as perspective is everything in life. It governs one’s mental outlook, which in turn determines one’s mental attitude to what is happening around, i.e. how you choose to interpret and how you decide your response. Hence, the sage wisdom, change your perspective, change your world.

Once you have learnt how to actively change your perspective on the crappy things in life, then life shows up differently. Even rainy days can be sunny days. The power of reframing things and events cannot be overstated. By doing this, you are creating the life you want to be part of.

It’s our choice where we put our attention. It’s our choice if in the morning when we wake up we look out the window and smile, listen to the birds sing, send a good morning message to all the people who matter in our lives, or be annoyed with everything, frown at the alarm and complain about the commute to work. The choice above is what shapes our lives. Whichever path we take leads us onto more similar experiences.

It just takes a shift in perception to see the better path – the path of positive perspective.
