  5. Don’t lose sight of where you’re going!

With the chaos and upheaval of the last few months many people have suddenly stopped or paused future plans seemingly associated with the uncertainty of the Covid outbreak.  With travel plans, job security, finances and economies in a state of uncertainty, do we need to pause everything in life and just live week to week or day to day?

Most definitely NO!  Check yourself for any of this behaviour and short term thinking showing up for you because inadvertently we can get caught up in this without even realising!

Many people drift through life without caring where they are going but it does create problems over time. They’re stuck in the day to day. They’re in a routine. They aren’t curious enough to discover who they are or where they’re going and over time their life becomes unsatisfying.

So it’s time to have a recheck on where you’re going – what are your goals and how have they changed due to recent events – it’s time to get back on track.

To help reassess your direction the following questions can be helpful.

Where Am I Going? What do I want for my life?

If you don’t know where you’re going, you might not like where you end up. Make life work for you, don’t let it just happen to you!.

Don’t end up in a job you hate, living a life you don’t enjoy, be in a relationship that doesn’t bring you joy, buy things that you have no idea why or letting other people manage your life!

What do you want to achieve by the end of 2020?  End of 2021? This month? This week?

The Wheel Of Life exercise often helps us see where our lack of satisfaction is lying and then enables us to look at those areas and choose actions and goals that will enhance our levels of satisfaction.

Rate the following areas out of 10.  10 being totally satisfied and 1 totally dissatisfied.

Finances, Intimate relationship, Family, Friends, Spiritual (eg values, purpose, your why etc), Fun, Career, Physical environment, Health and Fitness, Self development.

Which areas need a reset on goals?  Which areas rated the lowest?

Create goals based on what you really want in life; not what’s expected or even what seems “reasonable.”

So, where do you really want to go?

The famous 13th-century poet, Rumi has said, “Live life as if everything is rigged in your favor.” When you live and take action based on this philosophy, the steps to achieve what you want are more motivational and seem easier.  I know it might not always work in your favour but just keep the momentum of moving forward towards your goals as this is more motivational.

Where is My Daily Routine Taking Me?

Your daily routine is the clearest indicator of where you’re going and it’s essential that you check in on how you are spending each 24 hours.  Are they taking you to where you want to be or are they taking you in a downward spiral?

Because if they’re not moving you towards where you want to be, then how do you think you’re going to get to achieve what you want to achieve?  Time is a precious commodity and often I see people wasting their time on trivial unnecessary things.  What is the value that you place on all the things you do in each day?  Ranking what you do from 1 (Very important) to 4 (not important) is quite an eye opener – try it for a week and see how many 3s and 4s are in each day.

What’s Keeping Me from Where I Want to Be?

It’s a great exercise to write down all the things that keep stopping you from moving toward what you want.  Just keep on writing! You’ll be amazed at the excuses we use as to why we are not moving forward.

I don’t have time, I’m too tired, I don’t know how, I don’t have enough money, I’m not smart enough, too much responsibility, and on and on they go!

Now cross out everything that’s either a self-imposed limitation or an excuse. I bet you’ll be able to cross out most of them. Then have a look at anything left and unpack the obstacle – what do you need to do to move past the obstacle?

When we eliminate our excuses and swap them out with self belief and a plan then anything is possible!

You are more able and powerful than you ever imagine – connect to your strengths and your plan of action and create destinations/goals that you are excited to arrive at!
